...serious chops and a luxuriant trumpet sound...
Thomas Conrad, JazzTimes

In composing for his new recording, trumpeter Thomas Marriott purposely left much open in the music to allow his group of master improvisors to fill in the blanks. Sparring with saxophonist Hans Teuber along with the rhythm section of pianist Gary Versace, bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer John Bishop, Marriott lets his 6th recording for Origin unfold at its own pace, revealing an almost orchestral palette of moods, textures and dynamics.

"...the influences are but shadows; at core Marriott is his own man, conjuring shapely melodic counters." David Dupont, Cadence

Reviews of Constraints & Liberations

All About Jazz (Dan McClenaghan)
Trumpeter Thomas Marriott keeps growing as an artist. He has released CDs at a healthy pace since 2005: an introduction for many perhaps unwary jazz fans to some warped country western flavor on Crazy: The Music of Willie Nelson (Origin Records, 2008); cranking an all-star quintet up in a modern mainstream mode on Flexicon (Origin Records, 2009); a ...

Jazz Society of Oregon (George Fendel)
I can recall hearing a teenage Marriott sounding for all the world like Clifford Brown! As most musicians do, he's moved into other arenas, certainly finding his own voice, but it remains at times a silvery, gorgeous trumpet sound. On these seven originals, Marriott works little miraculous turns with tenor man Hans Teuber, and leaves lots of room f ...

All Music Guide (Ken Dryden)
Thomas Marriott's fifth CD as a leader marks a substantial departure from his earlier efforts. Not only does he focus exclusively on originals for this session, but his approach to the trumpet has moved away from a forceful pop style to a more reserved, yet emotional technique. Tenor saxophonist Hans Teuber, pianist Gary Versace, bassist Jeff Johns ...

JazzTimes (Bill Milkowski)
Seattle trumpeter-composer Thomas Marriott is joined by tenor saxophonist Hans Teuber, pianist Gary Versace, bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer John Bishop on this excellent release, his fifth for Origin. From the urgent free-leaning opener, "Diagram," which seems to use Miles Davis' "E.S.P." as a jumping off point, to the swinging title track, the ...

Cadence (David Kane)
It seems that the spirit of Miles Davis ca. 1967 is alive and well in the form of trumpeter Thomas Marriott's new CD, [ Constraints & Liberations]. That's not a bad thing in my book for curiously, although Miles has obviously been a huge influence in Jazz, the work he did with his late quintet in the few years just prior to his groundbreaking Bit ...

Berman Music (Tom Ineck)
If it were not for Origin Records, many of the wonderful jazz players of the Pacific Northwest would be unknown to those of us out here in the hinterlands. Among the most creative of these is trumpeter Thomas Marriott, a Seattle native who has had five releases as leader on Origin in the last six years. Constraints & Liberations is the latest, an ...

All About Jazz (Greg Simmons)
Listening to Thomas Marriott's Constraints & Liberations, two things are abundantly clear: Marriott spent some serious time studying Miles Davis' second great quintet; and, his own voice on trumpet is developed well enough to make it sound like a strong, easily recognizable influence, but not plagiarism. Naturally, favorable comparison to the one o ...

Downbeat (Chris Robinson)
The music on Constraints & Liberations operates and resides in that state between dreams and reality. The record slowly simmers with a restrained intensity and rarely comes to a boil. The soloists are stellar and never fail to tell engaging stories. Thomas Marriott's trumpet sound is as lush and inviting as it comes. "Up From Under" and "Clue ...

jazzreview.com (Thomas R. Erdmann)
1999 Carmine Caruso Jazz Trumpet Competition award winner Thomas Marriott has worked in Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau band, and with artists like Rosemary Clooney, Ritchie Cole, Charlie Hunter, Kenny Kirkland, Joe Locke, The Chico O'Farrill Orchestra, and The Tito Puente Orchestra, among others. Overall Marriott has appeared on over 100 record ...

Earshot Jazz (Peter Walton)
Released in November, Constraints & Liberations is trumpeter and flugelhornist Thomas Marriott?s second release of 2010, and it is his most satisfying disc to date. Marriott leads his quintet of saxophonist Hans Teuber, bassist Jeff Johnson, percussionist John Bishop, and pianist Gary Versace through seven original compositions, including Jeff John ...
