...he clearly hits one out of the park with this fine effort.
Ken Dryden

Trombonist Dave Glenn brings a top-flight band of New York artists together for a musical look at America's national pastime - baseball. Inspired by a month-long journey where Glenn attended 18 major league games in 19 days in 6 different ballparks, many of these tunes were composed with the sport's rich history in mind. With a stellar horn line, including tenor saxophonist Rich Perry and Dave Scott on trumpet, Glenn leads the six-piece ensemble through eight tunes all collectively brought together with the help of producer and trombonist John Fedchock. The rhythm section of Gary Versace, John Hebert, and Jeff Hirshfield propel the group in this modern look at the heart of America.

Reviews of National Pastime

All Music Guide (Ken Dryden)
Many talented jazz musicians are hidden from the jazz audience because they are full-time teachers in various colleges around the country, instead of gigging frequently in large metropolitan centers and making regular visits to the recording studio. Trombonist Dave Glenn is hardly new to the scene, as he spent a decade with the Gerry Mulligan Conce ...

Jazz Society of Oregon (George Fendel)
One month of watching 18 baseball games in six cities created the inspiration for Dave Glenn to write eight pieces for this sextet. The title tune depicts the feeling of anticipation on entering a stadium: the smell of beer and hot dogs, etc. Other tunes pay tribute to baseball heroes like Roberto Clemente or Hank Aaron, while still others express, ...

Audiophile Audition (Doug Simpson)
Dave Glenn's National Pastime celebrates two of America's cultural institutions: baseball and jazz. While both are intrinsically identified with the United States, they are not often found together. [How about Dave Frishberg?...Ed.] Glenn's project is a tribute to players past and present; a love letter to the game; it honors the fans and ballparks ...

Cadence (Larry Hollis)
Glenn...reinforcers my belief that some of the fine trombonists just keep coming out of the woodwork. It's not clear if National Pastime is his first recording as a leader (he's been working since the early 70's) but whatever the circumstances it would be safe to say Dave Glenn is more than ready, even overdue, to helm his own recording project. ...

International Trombone Association Journal (Chris Van Hof)
Dave Glenn's 2009 release explores the intersection of two truly American creations: baseball and jazz. Glenn is clearly a gifted trombonist and composer, who after years of working in New York City now teaches jazz at Whitman College in Washington state. Those New York years saw him playing with Gerry Mulligan; Blood, Sweat, and Tears; and count ...
