Jeff Johnson , “Tall Stranger”
Origin 82518
“The collective improvising here is about as good as it gets. ”
JazzTimes

Reflecting the lyrical eloquence and munificent flow for which bassist Jeff Johnson is so highly regarded, Tall Stranger is a collection of mostly originals and improvisations by Johnson’s equally esteemed, long-time trio with saxophonist Hans Teuber and drummer Billy Mintz. Johnson is a vital voice in Northwest jazz and a well-respected musician on the national scene. Besides being bassist for Philly Joe Jones’ band at 21, Johnson was a member of the Hal Galper and Jessica Williams trios throughout the ‘90s and he’s appeared on over 2 dozen Origin recordings. Tall Stranger is his fourth release as a leader and a modern jazz must.

All About Jazz.com (John Barron)
Bassist Jeff Johnson has built a stellar reputation in jazz circles, having worked with pianists Hal Galper and Jessica Williams and appearing on over two-dozen recordings for the Seattle-based Origin Records. For his fourth release as a leader, Tall Stranger, the Seattle-based Johnson, along with saxophonist Hans Teuber and drummer Billy Mintz, de...
Audiophile Audition (Doug Simpsom)
Seattle’s jazz scene is not well known for music that strays from a melodically mainstream focus. Emerald city bassist Jeff Johnson, though, has been producing challenging music that courses from avant-garde to stripped-down European-tinted free jazz, and his fourth album, Tall Stranger, finds the composer/player once again presenting liberating, s...
Earshot Jazz (Peter Monaghan)
Re-corded back in 2002, Tall Stranger opens with two group improvisations in which the players – Johnson, California drummer Billy Mintz, and treasured Seattle hornman Hans Teuber – feel each other out and enter an oblique, moody realm of light and shadow. These are three superbly exploratory players. Mintz is a drummer like no other – he measu...
All Music Guide (Adam Greenberg)
For his fourth album as a leader, bassist Jeff Johnson sets an exploratory course. On Tall Stranger, Johnson works with sax player Hans Teuber (with a bit of a free jazz bent of his own) and drummer Billy Mintz. The trio spends a lot of its time, however, seemingly working less as a trio and more as a collection of three independent players who hap...
Signal To Noise (Larry Cosentino)
It's rare to experience music that seems to strive toward complete immobility. Jeff Johnson's "Tall Stranger" has a staggering, strung-out pace that may drive some people crazy, but will surely delight others who resist our world's accelerating rate of input. All three legs of this trio (Johnson on bass, plus reedman Has Teuber and drummer Billy ...
JazzTimes (Susan Frances)
Tall Stranger is the fourth release from bassist Jeff Johnson as a bandleader and improvisational artist. Recorded on May 31, 2002 at the Cat House in Seattle, Washington, Johnson along with saxophonist Hans Teuber and drummer Billy Mintz create a free flowing exchange of musical ideas that traverse a wide array of eclectic-clad composites. The tri...
