John Stowell , “Resonance”
Origin 82443
“In the age of mediocrity and clones, John Stowell's uniqueness and originality is a breath of fresh air.”
Paul Horn

Performing solo on luthier Mike Doolin's acoustic masterpieces, guitarist John Stowell explores a set of originals and standards including Yesterdays, Prelude to a Kiss, Picture In Black & White and 10 others. Most noted for his seminal duo work with bassist David Friesen in the '70's, guitarist John Stowell's daringly original sound and concept have earned him the respect of the finest musicians in the world. "Resonance" displays all of this while remaining accessable to fans of the solo jazz guitar tradition.

Stowell is an internationally respected jazz guitarist, teacher, clinician, and columnist for Guitar Player and Sound Check Magazines. He has performed with many of the world's great jazz artists, including Milt Jackson, Billy Higgins, Lionel Hampton, Billy Hart, Art Farmer, Richie Cole, Conte Condoli, Ralph Towner, Herb Ellis, Scott Hamilton, Bill Waltrous, Paul Horn, Mundell Lowe, Pete Christlieb, George Cables, and Tom Harrell. Stowell has been touring the world constantly since the late seventies, performing over 250 dates a year.

REVIEWS:

All About Jazz (C. Michael Bailey )
Resonance, as manifested in the new recording of the same title by guitarist John Stowell, takes two guises. First, as a talented guitar player with an impressive rÈsumÈ, Stowell can be counted on, nee, expected to provide interesting and compelling performances of both his original and the jazz standard repertoire. This is certainly evident in his...
Audiophile Audition (John Henry)
Portland, Oregon-based guitarist Stowell has a super-cool approach to his instrument but with a minimum of fuss can tear up the strings with some complex improvising that seems to occur at almost the speed of light. He plays here acoustic-electric guitars made by Portland custom guitar-maker Mike Doolin, and using nylon strings. Doolin invited Stow...

All Music Guide (Scott Yanow)
This set of unaccompanied guitar solos was recorded informally by John Stowell over a one-year period whenever he would try out one of Luthier Mike Doolin's new custom-made guitars. All of the music is first takes and, after a period of time, Stowell realized that he had a fine CD suitable for release. In general, his versions of standards are upbe...
Berman Music Review (Butch Berman)
ìResonanceî is a collection of intimate, first-take ruminations by a master guitarist. Whenever Portland, Ore., luthier Mike Doolin created a new acoustic instrument, he invited his friend John Stowell to come over and give it a try, while the tape rolled. These 13 tracks, recorded over five years on assorted six-string and 12-string models, make f...
Acoustic Guitar, September 2005 (Rob Forbes-Roberts)
Jazz guitarist John Stowell unplugs for a solo set on acoustic guitars built by Portland luthier Mike Doolin. Playing a variety of Doolin's steel-, nylon-, and 12 string guitars, Stowell performs several excellent originals and covers such jazz standards as John Coltrane's "Equinox," Steve Swallow's "Peau Douce," and Jerome Kern's "Nobody Else but...
Just Jazz Guitar, August 2005 (Dr. Frank Forte)
Resonance is an excellent title for this unique CD by John Stowell. It was recorded in Portland, Oregon, between 2003 and 2004 at luthier Mike Doolin's home studio. All of the guitars were designed and built by Mike. John's style and his complete control of the tone and timber of the guitar, his master of dynamics, and the wonderful guitars th...
