Jeff Johnson , “Near Earth”
Origin 82429
“Their harmonic discreteness, sketched melodic lines, and cool reserve - call to mind the intimate group settings of say, Lee Konitz. ”
LA Jazz Scene

Jeff Johnson's third solo release for Origin records features his 14-year-old trio with saxophonist Hans Teuber and drummer Tad Britton, in a set of collective improvisations, originals, and takes on the pop tunes Dream and The Good Life. Born In Minneapolis, he left at age 20 to join the band of Philly Joe Jones. Since then he's performed with Charlie Rouse, Barney Kessel, Chet Baker, Lew Tabackin, Eddie Daniels, Mark Murphy, Julian Priester, Marlena Shaw, Billy Hart, Bud Shank, & Claudio Roditti to name just a few. His collaborations with the Jessica Williams and Hal Galper trios resulted in 12 recordings and continuous touring throughout the '90's and he's presently one of the most on-call working musicians in the country.

REVIEWS:

All About Jazz/New York (Laurence Donohue-Greene)
One word..."WOW!" Absolutely fantastic disc. Refreshing in this over-saturated music world of mediocre releases day in and day out. I hope this one doesn't get lost in the shuffle... It's up there right now with the Charles Lloyd/Billy Higgins ECM double disc as my favorite release of the year already! ...
All About Jazz (Dan McClenaghan)
The trio format without a chording instrument (a guitar or keyboard) tends to loosen the atmosphere, giving the music a more fluid feel. Bassist Jeff Johnson, joined by saxophonist Hans Teuber and drummer Tad Britton, achieves a compelling chamber-like fluidity on Near Earth. Teuber's tenor saxophone approach here has a clean, clear, bracingly ...
All Music Guide (Adam Greenburg)
Among the things coming recently from Seattle's Origin label is some top-notch improvisational jazz, much of it from a small collection of local musicians banding together from time to time for sessions that magically form into a coherent whole. On Near Earth, three of these musicians do what they do best ó make such music. Saxophonist Hans Teuber,...
Double Bassist (Jeff Campbell)
Double bassist Jeff Johnson and his associates here present music that is both "in" and "for" the moment. This is not casual music, but it is music that demands to be heard. These three improvisers work as a unified team to create a sound that will both surprise and satisfy the discerning listener. A quote from Johnson in the liner notes gives some ...
