Brent Jensen / Rob Walker Quintet, “Art of the Groove”
Origin 82427
“One of the standout discs of 2004, this comes highly recommended to fans of straight ahead jazz by five master artists of the groove.”
JAZZ REVIEW

Following the success of his two previous Origin releases, including "The Sound of a Dry Martini: Remembering Paul Desmond" which was featured on Jazzweek's Top 100 CD releases for 2002, NW alto saxophonist Brent Jensen explores the hardbop heyday of the mid-60's with "Art of the Groove." Featuring flugelhornist/composer Rob Walker and the Grammy-nominated New Stories trio, "...Groove" explores a set of 7 Walker and Jensen originals and the standards "It Could Happen to You" and "You Go To My Head," all influenced and inspired by the bands of Miles Davis. Jensen and Walker have been featured throughout the midwest in festivals and clubs. Rob Walker was named Best Jazz Artist for 2002 at MP3.com where he amassed over 200,000 plays of his music. Favorites of radio DJs and reviewers from their recordings with Don Lanphere, Mark Murphy and Ernie Watts, New Stories continues to define the evolution of the piano trio in this, their 18th year together.

All Music Guide (Adam Greenburg)
Alto sax player Brent Jensen here releases his third album, now in combination with flugelhornist Rob Walker. The theme of the album is creations based on the many stylings of Miles Davis, with the compositions stacked with originals from the pair. The album opens up with a bit of hard bop derived from a solo on a recording of Straight, No Chaser, ...
All About Jazz (Dan McClenaghan)
It seems fitting that Art of the Groove came out in mid-May, about a week before the late Miles Davis's birthday. The set spends some timeóand spends it wellósaluting the late trumpeter, most notably on the opener, with ìStraight From Miles.î Flugelhornist Rob Walker wrote the tune with phrases from the '58 recording of Davis's take on Thelonious M...
All About Jazz (Jack Bowers)
The Brent Jensen/Rob Walker Quintet opens in a mellow groove and stays there much of the way on this backward- glancing yet quite contemporary album that wouldnít have been out of place in the bop-based Blue Note / Prestige catalogs of the late ë50sñearly ë60s. Alto saxophonist Jensen and trumpeter Walker offer an earnest tribute to their musical p...

This 9-song set features 7 superb originals from the pens of principals Brent Jensen (alto) and Rob Walker (flugelhorn), alongside gorgeous takes on ìIt Could Happen To Youî and, especially, ìYou Go To My Head.î Backed by the New Stories Trio of pianist Marc Seales, bassist Doug Miller and drummer John Bishop, Jensen and Walker bring clever composi...
