It should be noted that like Lester Young, Bill Evans, and other of the more lyrical players, Pamela York plays each melody with a singer's grace and vibrancy. She plays music rather than technique.

Pamela York was born in British Columbia and grew up in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. She went to the same high school as Ingrid Jensen and Diana Krall and she took lessons from Diana whenever she could. Pamela earned an Associate Degree in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, a Bachelor's Degree from the Berklee College of Music, and completed her Master's Degree in Jazz from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, studying privately with Donald Brown and Jerry Coker. Pamela's first CD Blue York features her holding her own with the two great veterans, bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Its follow-up, The Way of Time, has Pamela as both a pianist and a singer on six standards and six originals in a combo with bassist Lynn Seaton, drummer Sebastian Whittaker, and guitarist Mike Wheeler while her third CD, Lay Down This World, is a collection of spirituals and hymns that she turned into jazz. In 2007 Pamela won first place in the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville, Florida.
