Lynn Bush
“...blessed with a smoky voice that recalls the alluring sang-froid of Julie London.”
Jazz Times Magazine
Seattle-based vocalist Lynn Bush has been winning critical acclaim ever since her debut CD "Still Life" featuring Seattle's grammy nominated trio, New Stories was released. Christopher Louden of Jazz Times writes "Backed by a masterful rhythm section ... she wades into challenging territory with admirable assurance. Equally impressive is her refreshingly offbeat approach" Dave Nathan, jazz critic for All Music Guide writes "Bush's voice is a marvel as it literally floats upon Seales' piano and Doug Miller's subtle bass as she puts her imprimatur on oft-played standards ... with her warm, contemporary approach."
This Midwest native has always been a singer, growing up in a home filled with Broadway show tunes and classical music. Singing professionally at 18 and working with musicians that had toured with the territory bands through the Midwest, she acquired a hands-on education singing everything from popular show tunes to obscure jazz standards, all delivered in a driving swing style that's rooted deep in the musical traditions of the Midwestern United States.
Studying music, voice and audio production in college, she performed continuously in clubs and music venues, including guest performances with legendary jazz innovator Max Roach, Michael Wolff Quartet and as opening act for Buddy Rich's last concert performance in Oklahoma City. As radio producer for KCSC-FM she worked closely with Barney Kessel, launching Mr. Kessel's radio series titled "Inside Jazz with Barney Kessel" which aired weekly on KCSC.
Most importantly, she has taken her musical inspiration from many influences including Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Dexter Gordon, Chet Baker, Shirley Horn, Betty Carter, Bill Evans, Mark Murphy and John Coltrane, searching for the perfect balance between music and conversation. Jazz programmers have embraced her honest and emotive style. Jazz critics find her work "mesmerizing" with it's "uncomplicated phrasing and cool timbre" and "the power to make a lyric mean something."
Lynn performs regularly with New Stories Trio and continues to enjoy the rich jazz culture of the Pacific Northwest.
