Reuben Radding
“Radding's bass soloing has its own voice; in pizzicato less guitar-like than say, vintage Charlie Haden yet much more agile and lively than say, Dave Holland; and arco he just burns--forget other bass players.”
The Improvisor, 1996
Reuben Radding is an improvising bassist who revels in variety, having lent his creativity to all genres, from avant garde to swing, folk, pop, klezmer, chamber music, and all points between. He grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC and was very active in that city's punk scene, but made his way to New York in 1988, where he was inspired by the bassists William Parker, and Mark Dresser to pursue creative music. Bass studies with Dresser and composition studies with Edgar Grana soon followed and Radding quickly immersed himself in the "Downtown" music community, performing in groups led by Elliott Sharp, Roy Campbell Jr., John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Andrea Parkins, Rashid Bakr, Dave Douglas, Anthony Coleman, Frank London, and many others. He toured Europe as a member of Marc Ribot's Shrek, and as the leader of Myth Science, a Sun Ra repertory band which also released a CD, "Love In Outer Space" on Knitting Factory Works.
Radding relocated to Seattle in 1997, where he performed with the likes of Wally Shoup, Amy Denio, Stuart Dempster, Wayne Horvitz, Eyvind Kang, Vena Cava, Carlo Actis Dato, Saadet Turkoz, Michael Bisio, Gregg Keplinger, Jessica Lurie, Damon Smith, 2 Loons For Tea, and many others. He received a grant from Artist Trust in 2001 to bring New York reed and brass master Daniel Carter to Seattle for a collaborative project. Their duo recording "Luminescence" was issued on AUM Fidelity in 2003.
Radding moved back to NYC in 2002 where he involves himself in projects with Daniel Carter, Billy Martin, Roy Campbell, Ursel Schlicht, William Hooker, Federico Ughi, Laura Andel, Sheqer, and Avram Fefer among others. He is featured on over 30 recordings, and has appeared at many major Festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz Festival, Vienna Jazz Festival, Kongsberg Jazz Festival, What Is Jazz? Festival, Earshot Jazz Festival, and the Seattle Improvised Music Festival.
