Bridge Quartet

Alan Jones showed us how exciting and full of anticipation Jazz can be.

Bridge

Sonny Rollins gave "the bridge" already a pretty deep jazz connotation. Bridge says something about joining two opposite sides, spanning chasms and making once improbable crossings possible - difficult crossings easy.

Music itself is a bridge between individuals, generations, ideologies.
Jazz is certainly a bridge between cultures and generations.
Rhythm and melody have been used as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. Bach, Coltrane and The Shaman walk that bridge.

The form (structure) of a song is a bridge between us when we play. Improvisation walks, runs or drives over those bridges ... sometimes improvisation flies into the bridge from the side, bending it out of shape momentarily or making it swing back and forth.

The music makes a bridge of expression and emotion between the players and the listeners ... those qualities travel in both directions across the bridge.

THE BAND

Saxophonist Phil Dwyer is one of Canada's most celebrated jazz artists, garnering multiple Juno awards (Canada's equivalent of the Grammy) as a performer and arranger. He and Jones most recently recorded together on the 2005 trio release "Let Me Tell You About My Day" on Alma Records.

Pianist Darrell Grant's recordings have topped jazz radio charts and made critic's top 10 lists from the New York Times to the Village Voice. He first met Jones in New York in the early 90's. There connection was the impetus for his to move to Portland in 1997.

Bassist Tom Wakeling is one of the most in-demand players in the Northwest, recording and touring with artists on both sides of the border. He is a member of Jones' sextet as well as leading his own quartet with Canadian trumpeter Brad Turner.

Globe-trotting drummer Alan Jones is best-known for his work with bassist David Friesen his leadership for many years of the Alan Jones Sextet, which for many Northwest listeners defines the essence of Portland jazz with its adventurous, hard-swinging original music, grounded in both jazz tradition and the rugged individualism of the Northwest.
